Berwick City v Manningham State 1 Men
By Berwick City
Berwick Boys get off the mark
On a mild Saturday night, with Vito cooking up a feast of lamb and chicken on his extra large spit, the Berwick City Men got their first win of the season against a very difficult opponent in Manningham United.
There were starting debuts for Sergio Yanez and Danny Jee as coach Carlos Retre made 3 changes to the starting line up from last week's team that lost to Warragul. Both debutants had excellent games as did the returning Ashley Savanah and Alpha Turay.
It was a tight game with both teams missing early chances, until the 33rd minute when Ricky Gonzales was brought down in the penalty area by a clumsy challenge. The spot kick was converted beautifully by Franco Costantino who sent the Manningham keeper the wrong way.
The second half started with a rich cloud of Vito's special lamb covering the Jack Thomas Reserve pitch. It was either the waft of food or the smokey souvlaki haze, but Manningham came out more determined and after a period of sustained pressure and several Berwick errors, they found an equaliser from the head of M.Vangeli via a corner.
However, less than 3 minutes later, Berwick regained the lead after a long diagonal pass from the very reliable Dominic Branca found Ashley Savanah in full flight who controlled beautifully with one foot and whilst still in full stride nutmegged the keeper with a clinical finish.
There were chances at either end for the rest of the game but Berwick held on for their first 3 points in State League One.
The Berwick Reserves remain undefeated and top of the ladder after a hard fought 1-0 win with the goal coming from a lovely volley from Connor Guyett.
Next week is the local derby against Casey Comet, away at O'Tooles Rd, Cranbourne.
Seniors k.o 8.30pm, Reserves 6.30pm.
