Berwick bounce back at home

Round 6 saw the Lions return to winning ways and also the return from premature retirement of club legend Orlando Mejias. ‘Ollie’ had surgery over the summer on his bashed up body and the doctors did such a great job of rebuilding him that he’s now stronger than ever and so he recently decided to come back and give the boys some extra fire power up front.

After last week’s disappointing effort, coach Gerry McDonagh demanded a response from his players and they delivered. In an open contest against a very committed North Caulfield team, it was a game of numerous chances and it was always going to come down to the team that took their opportunities. Berwick had their keeper Kris McEvoy to thank for keeping them in the contest and ensuring the teams went in level at half time. The second half started in similar fashion to the first, with both teams squandering good chances in front of goal. It wasn’t until the 53rd minute that the deadlock was broken by a fantastic solo effort from Paul McEvoy who took on a couple of players and fired a left foot shot from 30 yards into the bottom right corner of the goal. So while Paul put the Lions in front, it was his brother Kris that they then had to thank after several outstanding saves denied the opposition from equalising. And then in the 86th minute, Berwick broke the hearts of a gallant opposition when Senahid Tokalic fired a rocket from just inside the penalty area into the roof of the net that gave the keeper no chance.

The 2-0 win takes Berwick to third on the ladder, 2 points behind the leaders. Next week our boys travel to South Springvale in another tough challenge against a team sitting just one win behind them.
